    The Jupiter War...

A War of the "New-Wave-Old Instruments" approach versus the "Old-Traditional Modern instruments" approach...

It's Tate against Harnoncourt with Wolfie as the terrain...

The Whole Convoluted Scenario in it's glory...

With the rise of the whole "Authentic" instruments movement over the past 75 years there has been an incresing tension and conflict between musicians of the "Old-Modern School"...(Which curiously enough plays "New Instruments")...and musicians of the "New School"...(Which....yes you guessed it...play "Old instruments"

Of course the conflict barely begins there and goes to the battle of whether chin rests should exist or steel strings should ever supplant gut strings...

Further it carries over into interpretation...with Musicians of the "Old-Modern" school emphasizing interpretive insight over score literality...and Musicians of the "New-Ancient" school emphasizing score literality and authentic material surfaces:(to the extent that it's possible...as in making "Authentic-Gut Strings" they're still having difficulty locating healthy  extant 18th century Ovian specimens, whence one might derive said material...

Nowhere is the contrast any more vivid than with these 2 performances of The Jupiter symphony by Wolfie.

On the one hand there is Harnoncourt and the Vienna taken it a bit more slowly and rendering each phrase with greater color and expressive dimension...while Tate and the English Chamber Orchestra use a much quicker tempo and oft substitute excitement and elan  with greater score literality for subjective insight and flexibility.

A FURTHER irony here is the Nikolaus Harnoncourt himself originally rose from the ranks of the "New-Ancient" school and nows finds himself commander of the "Old-Modern School"   Could anyone find Moliere's telephone number?

Which do you think catches the truth of this expression better...and WHY?
